What is called the keys are 1949-S 1955-P 1953-P I think 1954-S is also one... If you looking for BU coins then the list gets bigger.... Speedy
there are no true keys in the Franklin Series unless you are looking for coins in the MS64+ range. All the coins can be had in xf for slightly over melt, I put together a set from my dealer's junk silver bin with nothing below vf for $2.75 per coin, with many of the coins in AU with decent luster.
I have to disagree with that...it took some time trying to find the 1953-S...also you found a 1949-S and 1955 in the junk box for $2.75???...I find that hard to believe.... Speedy
I didn't say "junk box" I said "junk silver box" the difference is that the junk box usually contains international coins or other interesting (but usually unknown) items, but junk silver is anything that is 90% silver and has no great premium to my dealer. Basically whenever anyone sells him their silver hoard he does a cursory look through it and dumps the vast majority of it into a big box that he lets people sort through. The last time I was there I sorted through about 500 Franklins since his most recent acquisition was mostly them, and yes I did find both a 49S and a 55P in the bin. With silver currently low I was able to buy them (along with about 30 others) for $2.75 each. here are the pics, the 49S is a VF and the 55 is AU+ with great luster. 49S Obv. Rev. 55 Obv. Rev.
I have one thing to say....go back and get every one of them that you can find of the same date and mintmark...more that likely since he ahd just gotten them he didn't know they were in there...because he could have made much more than $2.75 on these. Speedy
It's been 2 or 3 weeks and I know he has pretty good turnover in that bin because I've been been there only a few days apart and it was vastly different both times. While I was sorting the halves out of the bin he was on the other side of the counter sorthing quarters into it from a recent purchase. After I finished looking at halves i asked if he had any Mercury's and he replied that someone had been in over the past weekend and bought the entire bin of silver. Bottom line, I doubt there are any halves from when I was looking still there, but I expect that I will keep finding other things like that as I REALLY enjoy looking through it and I intend to again.
That would have been me!! J/K! Someone was smart when he got that...who knows...he might have gotten some better date coins! Speedy
hmmm, I think it may just be an effect of the photography and lighting because while the coin has really good luster I don't think it is a proof. On the other hand, the day I was looking through the halves I was able to pick this impaired 62 proof up for melt. It had scotch tape in both of the obverse fields and on the lower portion of the bell on the reverse. Additionally there is a little bit of green verdigris in the letters of "pluribus" on the reverse. It has had an acetone bath or three and the tape and residue is off, but it is obvious that it was there 1962 Frankie proof obverse: reverse:
no, not really, there are a handful of the Walkers that command a pretty steep premium even in low grade, unless you stuck to a short set of 1941-1947, I suppose.
I figured as much. I'd seen Walkers in dealer "boxes", but I imagine those are just the very common issues. I'm calculating bullion value as 12.5 grams X 90% pure X $7.00/[tr oz] / (31.1 gram / [tr oz]) =$2.53. Sounds doable.
Picking through dealers junk silver boxes is one of my favorite pastimes. There is a local flea market guy that only wants 5X face. He doesn`t always have a new supply, but when he does, I have no problem plunking down $2.50 for his walkers. Yeah, they are commons from the mid 30s through the 40s, but I pick out the better condition ones if someone didn`t beat me to it that day. He seldom has Franklins though. In any case, you can`t go wrong buying VF-AU walkers for under silver spot.
this is gonna sound dumb...and i apologize....but can anyone tell me where on the franklins there was a mint mark? i cant seem to find it
