    Holey Moley,

I just won an auction for a neat commerative coin and stamp, paid less than $3.00 for it. There was no shipping shown on the auction so I requested an invoice. YIKES!!! $8.25 for shipping :( I'm not in a good mood over this. That darn coin & stamp had better be JUST as described.

I too learned the hard way. I had the same thing happen and ended up with a $9.25 shipping charge. Now if the charge isn't listed I don't even look at the item.

There is a button for sending a "Question to Seller" on every EBay auction page.

With all the threads that have been posted about ridiculous shipping/handling charges, I just don't understand why any forum member would bid on an auction that doesn't specify the amount of S/H, without first pushing that button and asking the seller "How much?". (A seller who doesn't answer isn't to be trusted.)

Didn't really have the time Roy as I sniped the auction at the last minute :D

Fortunately for me, I have learned this lesson through others experiences. It does suck but there is certainly a lesson to be learned about under what conditions one should place a bid. Hopefully, the value is closer to the $11 you are paying than the $3 of your winning bid?

I refused to pay for a ebay winning bid because he changed the shipping charges and terms after the deal. You can always tell him to stick in his ear unless shipping is less.

I would ask him why so high....tell him that you will pay just what it costs plus $1-$2 extra....tell him that ebay has a rule about hitting people up for postage.

In that situation you pay your money and take your chances. BTW - been there, done that.

If I have time I usually always ask the shipping charges. Most times I get an exact amount other times I have received an "approximate" amount which is always off a $1 or 2. More sellers are getting to where they will not give out this information too soon. I have learned my lesson and now my policy is "no exact shipping amount, no bid". If it is the buyers responsibility to cover the sellers listing fees (the norm nowadays), then they should at least provide the amount up-front on their listings.

It is almost impossible for ebay to police this problem. The problem isn't with the postage but that darn "handling" fee which is only as good as the sellers honesty.

Bone digger, next time you go sniping on ebay be sure of what you are shooting at...lol but seriously this seller is a RIP OFF. I never bid on anything without knowing the shipping charges. TOO many scam artists on the Net.

I disagree. There is never a reason to be ripped off if the moeny is still in your hands. Nobody is holding a gun to your head.. You email him and politely explain your view. If it gets ugly, you just calmly explain it again. Nobody expects that you have to be ripped off.

That's why I quit going to ebay. Pay $3 S/H only to get the coin in a regular envelope and a $0.39 stamp.

Glad I only charge $1-$2 (depending on size) when I sell coins or trade. At least I can sleep at night.

I think it was my second auction on ebay that I got hit for $5.99 in S&H for two circulated coins you could get from any bank. I griped about it for a bit and then wrote it off as one of those "life lesson" things. This one was a twofer, always check the S&H fees and read the descriptions very carefully. People say how experience is the best teacher and it still holds true no matter what you're doing or how old you are. All in all this one wasn't terribly costly I suppose.
