I was all set to start a new thread when it occurred to me that what I'm suggesting might well be unacceptable to our administrators. I'll go ahead and post what I had written in my word processor, and if my proposal is not acceptable, I'm sure the administrators will tell me. Here it is:

I was wondering if any coin collectors who visit this site have another collecting hobby. I’ve found that people will collect just about anything: comic books, beer cans, old photographs, knives, railroad memorabilia, etc. I thought it would be interesting to hear from any of our coin collectors who have an additional hobby unrelated to numismatics.

    Tell us more

Since the adminsitrators are apparently all right with this topic, I wish you two (and others who may follow) would tell us more about your other hobbies. Why are you attracted to them? Are they in any sense comparable to coin collecting?

I'll leave it, but let's not get too carried away with these kind of post - at least not here, the GD forum is fine though.

When I go somewhere; no matter where in the world, i'll get a postcard write the date on it and send it to myself.

I build little models from scratch out of household objects.

I've been collecting match box labels ever since I've been a child. I've got more than 1500 different types of genuine match box labels from India. And I collect French India Stamps. I value the match box labels high as they remind me of my childhood..

For many years I drag raced a turbocharged 4-cylinder 1985 Dodge Omni GLH Turbo. I had homemade alcohol injection and ran 16 pounds of boost with no intercooler. I gutted the interior. This car was street legal.
It ran a best quarter mile elapsed time of 14.63 seconds at 98.25 mph on street tires. This car weighed 2,200 pounds.
I constantly beat 5.0 Mustangs, beating five of them in one night at New England Dragway.
I beat a late model Corvette. How? Holeshots!
I was the president of the New England Shelby Dodge Auto Club.
    They have a website.

You ask why did I do it?
The rush. The thrill. The light turns green and you floor the gas pedal. In less than 15 seconds you are going 100 MPH. And it's perfectly legal.
Money? Yup blown engines and blown up turbos cost bucks.
    I sold the car.

I now sink that cash into coins, a lot safer.
Also I have a large Hot Rod Magazine collection. The oldest magazine is 1958.

My tastes have changed drastically over the years. Every three years, I get to move to another part of the world, so I tend to pick up on other hobbies. The bad part is, I don't get rid of anything, so this makes the next move even harder.

    Lets see,
    I've collected Baseball Cards--but haven't bought a card since 1994.
I still haven't shaken the computer bug since 1989.
Ancient rings...gold and silver...this ones on hold since most are too costly here
Fantasy Miniatures...love to paint them, but since I've had lasik surgury, my close up vision is terrible
Military medals...I'll admit,my reference books are much more extensive then my collection
Fossils...the Mrs can't stand this one....lugging rocks across the world. Fortunately, I haven't been active
Pocket Watches...Growing up, I wanted to learn how to repair them, but its a dying art
Wolf artwork; however, I've piggybacked off my wife's hobby
And lots of eclectic stuff: the prize being a Byzantine Cow Bell...

Of course coins: I've dabbled in CWT, Notgeld, Depression Script, Broken Bank Notes, Foreign

I don't really collect anything else, but my other hobbies are...

1.) Planted aquariums. Right now i have a 40gal that's been running for 2+ years. Thinking about breaking it down and buying a 150-250gallon aquarium and starting that up. I love the look of a tank loaded with live plants and a few tiny fish darting around them. I consider it art.

2.) Ford Mustangs. I build, race and love Mustangs. I own two of them. Dragracing them is fun, but i prefer road racing and autoXing. Taking a curve at 100+ MPH is a lot more fun that driving down a straight line...even if both get your blood pumping. This is my #1 hobby and had been for 10+ years

Coins is more a passive hobby to me. None of my friends really know I do it since i'm only 25 and most of my friends don't care about that sort of thing. The do love the aquarium though. They think it looks cool at night when we are hanging out and the tank is backlit. The girls love it too. They like to see the coins now and then, but for the most part you'll find me out at a dragstrip, AutoX course or car show on a weekend in the summer.

I had aqariums for years. I bred and raised Swordtails, Black Mollies and a very interesting fish called the Red paradise.
The Red paradise male builds a bubble nest on the surface. The pair mate under the nest and the eggs float up and cling to the nest. Quite a sight to behold.
Anyway, back to drag racing. You go to New England Dragway? Road racing. I saw Paul Newman at Lime Rock racing his Ford V-8 Panos. Got some nice pics of him and of JoAnne Woodward giving him a good luck kiss. He came in second, the old fox.
