In another forum, an acquaintance claimed she owned an Maria Theresa thaler "counterfeited" by the U.S. Office of Strategic Services. A 1963 article entitled "Deadly Gadgets of the OSS" claims such were made, but I don't find it credible. Among the suspect claims: The coin was "about the size of a 25-cent piece" The last real ones were made in 1870 The OSS made an "excellent mold" from two or three authentic thalers The resulting coins were as fine a thaler as Maria Theresa had ever seen once the flashing was trimmed off. (Of a coin with an inscribed edge, no less). Hence my question. Have any MTT's been certified as being produced by the OSS?
Some were minted by the British in various places during that period but they were of normal size. This place has information on them: http://www.theresia.name/en/svariants.html Maria Theresa Thaler (Used)
Thanks. I also found this article. Neither mention the rumored OSS issuance. http://numismaster.com/ta/numis/Article.jsp?ad=article&ArticleId=10311
