I just received some coin pocket pages for a binder that I can put all of my 2x2s and flips into. However, I'm unsure how I should organize the coins. Should I put them together by country, by type, by rarity, by weight (heaviest towards the last pages)? Random would be easiest I'm thinking I definitely should put heavier coins like my dollars towards the back so I don't have to turn those pages as often (as a heavier page may tear more easily). Anyone have experience or input? Thanks
I have organized mine by countries. I then start with the lowest denomination and work my way to the highest denomination. I like this way best because it is easier for me to keep track of what I have. When you start to get hundreds of coins it is tough searching through every page looking to see which coins you need. IMO But that being said I think you should organize your collection the way you like it. iF that means the heavier coins are in the back then great.
Different binder for different countries. Binders are cheap. Get them, stick a label in them, viola! Denomination, for what I do, highest denomination first. Sub-denomination: Year Sub Year: Mintmark ~Cannyn
I have mine by denomination (I only collect US coins) and then the year they are minted, so Washington quarters are together, silver dollars together, etc.
I only collect US coins so sorting them by country is not realy an option I sort them by sort and date. I have pages for my lincoln memorials, lincoln wheats, ... And there i sort them according to date and mintmark. Only "downside" on this method is that when you get a new coin and its from a date in between what you allready have, then you must sort them again.
For my foregin coins, I have one binder for each continent, and then the pages are in alphabetical order by country. For my American coins, I have a binder for each denomination, and then they are arranged in chronological order. EDIT: For the foreign pages, I sort them from smallest to highest denomination.
By country then year sounds logical. I don't have THAT many coins (only like 200), but for many different countries... so several binders would be kind of a pain. But that would be nice. I also only have 20 pages with 20 pockets each.
Before you put any coins in the pages make sure they are PVC free. But the easiest way to organize is probably alphabetical by country. Then by denomination then by year, this way if you're looking for one specific coin it makes it much easier.
This is also what I do. I had a good friend that only sorted by date. i.e. he would have a 1900-1909, a 1910-1919, etc. It was fun to look at his books because you would find many surprises hidden in the pages. :smile
I'd like to elaborate a little. I also have a 3-ring just for new purchases. Periodically, I remove the coins & put them in the proper 3-ring or maybe send them to a TPG etc. I also have two Dansco books that contain only one coin per country. Occasionally, I exchange some of the coins in the 1 per country with proper coins from my normal A-Z country books or the new purchases book. I also have a couple set-specific books. For example, all my leprosy colony pieces are in one 3-ring. Other themes that I collect may also warrant their own 3-ring or group of pages.
These previous CT threads describe possible ways to organize your collection. http://www.cointalk.com/t43465/ http://www.cointalk.com/t92330/
Ill tell you how I put them in my binder. I start with my U.S silver in order by face value, next I have just my regular U.S coins in face value order, then in the back I have my foreign and all sorts of different stuff. This most likely didnt help but Im just trying to get to 100 posts so I can have my first contest, so look forward to it
Hah, cool can't wait! Just finished putting my coins in the album. Dang my silver dollar pages are HEAVY!

One more question... Any particular tips/tricks to displaying flips (with the paper inserts)? Stinks when the paper covers the back of the coin :\
Unfortunately, that's something you'll just have to live with. One more thing, GW. You're going to find, particularly for larger coins in cardboard 2x2's, that if you ever have to rearrange them in the 20-pocket pages to make room for additional coins, the slots have a tendency to stretch and the 2x2's can slip out of them fairly easily. If you're using the regular notebooks, you just have to be careful how you handle them. Chris
