It looks like it could be a Die Crack---most of the time small die cracks like this don't add any value but I have seen coin like this sell for more than $0.25 to the right buyer...at the right time. Speedy
Welcome to the forum Not sure what you have there, but its not a die crack. Die cracks look more like a crack you'd find in a cement sidewalk. If I were to guess, I say it might be a "dropped letter/number". If its a dropped letter, or in this case a dropped number, its a rare error. To me it looks like the left side of an "8". You can find and example of one HERE , just scroll down a bit. What do you think Mike? (MikeDiamond is our resident error expert )
That's what I was wondering too. But I figured, being that its theoretically grim packed up into a letter/number, then I can see only a partial fill falling out, or a whole one that broke into pieces and only the harder portion surviving.
It's too thick, too sinuous, and too short to be a die crack, in my opinion. That's especially true of blind-ended die cracks, which tend to be very thin. It could be an oddly-shaped die chip or some kind of die damage. The image is too blurred and dark to refine my diagnosis any further.
Here's a cut an past edit of oregonnative's original. I didn't change the size or anything, just moved a portion of the "defect". Looks like a perfect match for the left side of the 8.
I do believe lawdogct is on to something here! If it is a dropped letter, or in this case, dropped number you would want to have this one authenticated and graded!
After looking at the pic's a little closer, It look's almost identical to the top of the shorter treetop on the right? Look again and see if you agree.
I'm with Mikediamond, its not a dropped letter as I originally guessed, as the item is raised up from the coin. My only other guess would be a die-clash, but I can't make any part of Washington's hair line up with that region of the reverse. Oregonnative - do you mind posting a picture of the obverse (face) of the coin? This is a fun one, not sure what it is
