Hi there all, I have the opportunity right now to buy a 2000-S silver Kennedy half-dollar graded PF70 by NGC. The thing is though that it's only going to cost 49.95. Now the thing is, I collect coins right now with only a ballpark estimate of what's worth what. I'm more into buying coins that interest me with only a slight concern for what it's worth. But when I saw this I thought that either this Kennedy really isn't worth that much, or the seller just doesn't realize what he's got. What does everyone else think of this? I know I'm going to buy it, but is this coin really only worth $50-$70 at PF70??
If you can get him down to $35 - $40, then maybe. But personally I wouldn't. I'd buy one graded 69 for half that.
Well, it's just that I checked PCGS's priceguide just now and saw they have their PROOF70 2000-S Silver Kennedy at $550. I know; or have heard they overprice, but still, after checking the prices of othe PF70 Kennedys and seeing them at a few hundred dollars I just thought this one was really underpriced.
Right, I figured as much. Well, it still looked nice to me and I bought it anyways. My first PF70. After searching for other Kennedy PF/PR70s and finding a good number in the $200-$400 range I figured this is probably the cheapest I can find right now. And if it does turn out to be just $50 or less; that's fine. If it is a lot more than even better. But I do like silver coins, and while Kennedys aren't much to get too excited about it'll still be a nice addition to the collection. Your advice is appreciated though. I really need to pick up the Red Book.
Red book is not a good price guide as far as I am concerned, but will help with information on coins.
7 listings on e-bay in the last two weeks for $39.99 and one for $49.99. May find one at a show for less.
Going STRONGLY with GDJMSP here man. Gonna ask you this? Can YOU tell the difference between a PR69 and PR70? Getting to be an old story but my boss had me pick out the five best Reverse of 07 2008 Silver Eagles for slabbing. I saw flaws on EVERY one. 4 came back MS70 the other a 69. 70 is a number. It's one higher than 69 but costs a lot more in a slab whether or not it's right.
No, I'm no professional grader. And maybe it is just a number, but really, as I mentioned silver coins are a large part of what I collect, and I haven't yet aquired a "perfect" proof coin. That's all. Maybe I could've got one $10 cheaper, but it's only $10. Now if we were talking a difference in the $100's that'd be different...
You live and learn. It's all part of being new to the hobby. I'll shop around better next time. :smile
Didn't mean to sound harsh Steve. Just stating what I see. You got your slabbed PR70 (by a respected TPG at that) but I wouldn't make it an obsession as it were and you've already cleared that up. 10s vs 100s. Frankly I don't understand the "obsession" so many have with the MS or PR70 on modern (especially bullion) coins. The technology is there to produce them. We have a customer that is "obsessed" with 70 grade coins. He has a PCGS PR70 Reverse Proof 2006W Silver Eagle. Guy has a good eye and sent it in. PCGS lists at $1300. I found one on ebay that went for $525. To me that "coin" is now worth $525 TOPS! I'd pay maybe $300 for it just so I could resell it. Now toss me an MS68 Morgan or PR68DCAM Franklin cheap and I'll buy those all day if I can afford them. I don't even collect those but the technology wasn't as good nor were the preservation methinks. clembo
Oh, I didn't take anything you've said harshly. Infact I appreciate the responses Clembo. I usually go for older coins, and believe me, if I could afford a MS68 Morgan I'd be all over that. Right now the best I've got is a few MS64's. I guess the obsession is that the ones that actually get the MS70/PR70 just don't come around as much as MS69/PR69. Infact it seems for most modern coins that's the standard. I mean how many Silver Eagles do you see MS 67 or 68? Hardly any. And it's because like you've said, that's what the technology now adays is suppose to do. I guess when it comes to more modern coins I would just rather spend the extra money to get the best grade possible.
send $10 to me. i am looking for progressive individuals like you if i can find 10000 of you every year i wont have to go to work
Kennedy's are generally slow movers in selling as well as increase in value! You might purchase it now for only $49.95 but might have to hold on to it for many, many years to unload it for what you paid on it or suffer a loss and sell it for less. You would be better off to spend five to ten times that much on a nice, certified and graded Capped Bust or Liberty Seated Half Dollar which will generally steadily gain in value. My advice would be to concentrate on the low valued, low mintage coins (sleepers) which should take off in value in a few years and may soar to extremely high values. Frank
Dont be sorry! You made the purchase for a coin you liked and wanted. That is 100% all that matters maybe with patience you might have found another cheaper, maybe not. but in the end who cares? You liked the coin and the price so you bought it... end of story enjoy the coin
You're right, maybe when it arrives I'll post some pics, see what everyone has to say. Assuming I can figure out by then how to add pics to threads.
we have ALL been there mate, no worries with that! if you have any troubles, just post a thread asking, someone always pops in to help there is also a sticky by Speedy i believe. that might help you as well.
