Hello all, I 'resurface' once again as I am about to go to the FUN show, Tampa tomorrow. For those of you who do not recognize me, I have inherited my Father's coin collection. I bought a PCGS subscription and had about 20 coins graded. Many of the St. Gaudens came back very well, as well as the 55 DD cents. My thoughts were to possibly sell off some of the silver to have enough cash to have the remaining 14 or so St. Gaudens graded. (these won't grade as high as 61-63, like the first batch) and 2 gold proof sets 1911 and 1901 and a 6 coin Mex gold proof set (one is the 50 Peso) Well, I have been attempting an inventory of the silver coins. There is quite a lot of worn silver. (no clad) There are: 1008 Washington quarters (worn coins) 161 Washington quarters (nice coins) 1064 Washington quarters (in BU rolls) 430 Half Dollars (Walkers, Franks, Kenns) 58 rolls Dimes (Barber, Mercs, Roos) 4 rolls Dimes UNC 28 rolls 5 cents (Buffs, Jeffs) 73 rolls 1 cents (Wheats, Lincs) Here's the question: Would anyone sacrifice any of the silver to have the gold graded, if so, what type of silver? Thanks!
Sounds like you will have a heavy load to carry in with you. I would suggest hanging onto the quarters (1) (2) (3) and personally I'd hold your 90% half dollars, saving any WLH for last. As for which silver to unload: dimes, and war nickels first along with buffalo nickels and one cent coins. Definitely get the rest of your classic gold coins authenticated, especially if you are looking to resell them after grading. Just my 2¢ Welcome back to CT and good luck at FUN! Let us know what you pick up and/or what grades your coins come back with.
Thanks Krispy! I can't possibly take everything along (I don't even have an escort) I am not looking to sell the gold after grading, but I was thinking it might be protected better. But is it worth it? I have roll upon roll of cents, but they won't be worth much, and hard to carry. I understand the War Nickels, but you would unload the Buffs before the Jeffs? I'm thinking the dimes are lightweight. I have many rolls of Roos. I would keep the Mercs, right? And i have two small boxes of WTF? that I have compiled. Don't even know what these things are. Things I would like checked for overdates. A bunch of 1949 Quarters, etc.
I think the fees are worth the expense of grading the gold coins unless you are certain they will only come back 'genuine', have been damaged or harshly cleaned and only amount to low grade bullion. I just figured Buffalos would be easy to unload. Jefferson nickels unless key dates, errors or war nickels -or- if they are MS don't seem worth toting along either. Go with the dimes, most value with the least amount of effort to lug them around. I wouldn't sell anything unsearched or anything you don't know what you have, so set all that stuff aside until you have time to look them over and learn what you have.
There are going to be some dealers at the FUN show who won't care if the gold is graded or not, they will still give you a fair price if you are interested in selling.
I love your dad ...and I am sure you do too. This is the stuff that I dream about with my kids that they will someday cherish my collection after I am gone and also have a little nest egg for "just in case edited happens"! Such an incredible story and I am so happy for you. As for me, I would sell all the Roosies...not sure how many they are of the 58 rolls, but you should be able to move that at today's silver prices to MORE than have enough to have the gold graded...which I think is a good idea by the way. Next choice would be the JFKs and then the Franklins. I wish I had your situation...I would sell some of the worn silver to buy a set of the 5oz ATB quarters (but I just want one of those sets!)
Hi Debordj, Thanks for the advice. I packed up 10 rolls of Roos. That may get me started. If need be, I can go back to the show on Sunday. I'll look for the set of 5 oz ATB quarters (although I have no idea what that is!)
rosethe - the mint has made bullion versions of the America the Beautiful quarters in 5 oz silver. 3 inches wide! I like them but they are getting sold through dealers with a price ceiling set by the mint. About $900 for the 5 if you could get them. Being sold on the secondary market in the $3-4,000 range. Way out of my price range and not worth it now...maybe someday. Would love one for $900 though! I am sure you won't find them at FUN for anything less than $3000. Check them out though, they are NICE! And should be pretty rare...only making 30,000 in total I believe?
2010 AtB 5 oz. coins: 33k minted of each of the five designs for 2010 -- Bullion versions. Total: 165,000 minted across the five designs. And the yet to be confirmed for release and who / how they will be sold, 27k numismatic versions minted of each of the five designs for 2010. Total: 135,000 across the five designs.
I'm back and exhausted from carrying my super heavy purse around my shoulders. Wow, that is a huge show. Daunting for someone who doesn't know the 'ropes'. Anyways, I brought along 17 St. Gaudens and had them looked at by Randy Campbell, IGC. He 'insta-graded' them for me. And I think he's pretty accurate, if not conservative. (in July, his estimations on my coins were, in fact, low) Out of this 17 coins, I thought I would only have MS 62, 61 or lower. He gave the majority MS 63 and one MS 64! I bought some flip folders and did not have any graded. (I thought, he's pretty much told me what I wanted to know) I sold only 2 rolls of Roos dimes, and got melt x 19. I bought the 2011 Red Book (the only other RB I have is the 2007- which a nice CT'er mailed me ) Comparing the two books, I have a couple of questions. In some of the columns, why did all the prices edge up, except for one (high grade) which went down? And why are some of the PF 63 (PR65) prices lower than the MS prices (see RB pg. 173)? I noticed the prices of the cents have really gone up, looking at the 1922 no D and the 1955 DD. Maybe I should somehow liquidate all the low grade silver and buy quality pieces with the money. But I would need someone to help me go through it, so I don't overlook anything....:dismay::bangg: and figure out what to buy. Maybe next year....
+1 Sounds like the best plan and bound to provide you with a nice piece or pieces to enjoy for many years.
Another FUN show here in Orlando. I am thinking about going, although I am in a 'holding pattern'. In the last 18 months, the values sure have declined. I don't know what to think about this. I have a lot of economic concerns, mainly with the threat of deflation. I've read some articles that suggest that gold might go down to $750. Still watching Europe for some signals on that. http://www.deflationeconomy.com/gold-and-deflation.html My entire future is wrapped up in my Father's Collection. (see my other starter threads) And I don't know how to handle it now. Almost 3 years, post-divorce, and I'm now having to start selling off assets to survive--all except my Father's Collection- God willing. I feel that this is not a good time to sell junk silver to pay for more grading of the gold coins. Do you agree? I got 19x melt in 2010. Now, what would it be? Thanks, Rosethe
