Been collecting over a year and still have a hard time telling the difference between a true doubled die and machine doubling, especially on the 1970's cents.

    Thoughts on this one?

In the date, it almost looks like both machine doubling and doubled die, if that's even possible? IMG_20150930_083700.jpg

It's just a smear of the characters, i.e., strike doubling, although it's a date that does have doubled dies.

Thanks for the input. Really thought I saw some rounded raised imprints, especially around "in God we", but stare at anything long enough and the mind sees Elvis and Jimmy Hoffa in Lincoln's face :)

Looks like MD on the date. A 1972 DD is doubled on the date, Liberty and In God We Trust.

I don't want to beat a dead horse, but is it possible to have md and dd on the same character? I keep seeing 3 marks on the 7 and 2 especially.

Do you see how that doubling is on both sides of that 7? On the 9, too? That's from a bounce. The die took a bad hop. :)

    Yes.

And quite frankly, some of the 1972/72 varieties are really, really, minor in the doubling area which could greatly affect the appearance of the doubling.

Your photo's are really too blurry for any kind of accurate attribution. Try taking them at a high resolution instead of enlarging portions from your primary photo.

The alternative is to send the coin to CONECA for accurate attribution if you feel strongly that its a doubled die.

Simply follow the instructions on the CONECA Website:

Your pictures need to be sharper.
