I got this 09 VDB out of a shotgun roll of wheaties and it has got great detail and nice toning in my opinion, but something seems off about the toning. I have seen and handled 1000's of pennies and never have I been so thrown by a coins tone. It seems as though the color is spotty and not even. My first thought was a matte proof, but what are the odds of that! Any input on this would be greatly appreciated.
Nah, I have seen that color before. It was just prob in a roll for a while, thats where this coloring tends to come from.
I agree there's nothing unusually about the color normal to me .I would even grade it around an AU50. JC JC
I don't really understand what kind of toning you are seeing A lot of my wheats look just like that I say you have a good AU VDB
I've also seen that toning. I'm a little tougher on the grade. The scratches on the obverse push it to an EF-40 for me. It is a nice coin to find in a roll though.
Normal color and a nice coin, an AU-55, 58 on a good day, lots of luster remains, but I'll agree with Phil, the obverse scratches net it into the XF range. Great roll find for sure.:thumb:
