What do you all think the white substance in the devices on this Flying Eagle that sold in the HA Eric Newman auction today?

I don't know what that is, but I have seen similar "stuff" on mid-nineteenth century silver coinage that has also been certified by PCGS and received a CAC sticker. It's just funk, as far as I can tell.

I'm wondering if it's really all that white looking in person. It could be the lighting used is changing the actual look.

The surfaces look funky in the pictures. I'm wondering if that has anything to do with the "white" gunk that shows up?

That is one grainy looking coin! The white may be in the plastic/reflection or it's simply "cac", thus the sticker. :angelic:

If I had to guess I'd say it was dip residue.
