Here are some coins that I bought this summer, been a while since I've been able to sit down and take a closer look. I'm thinking about sending a few of them in to NGC/NCS...so feel free to chime in with your thoughts on them. Here goes:
I'd just like to point out that my photo setup does not do so sell with copper cents and nickels, for some reason. I'm sure it's the lighting...
very nice pictures! i dont see anything worth sending in other than the 1909 s lincoln and the 1914 d maybe but i think it will grade really low. though id still reccomend it for authentication purposes
The 1880H Canada 10¢ seems to be in VF condition and catalogs around $100. The 1925 5¢ is frequently counterfeited, so it may be best to have it certified.
Love the Italian coins. Those are some workin coins. They changed hands many times, and have a lot of historical value.
I see nothing that NCS could help. And I don't think NGC or PCGS would slab the '14-D other than a Genuine or Details slab. Other than that I wouldn't send anything in.
Both the Canadian coins are worth enough to be slabbed in their condition, IMO. I usually set $100 as the minimum value a coin is worth slabbing and both of them meet that criterion. Just my 2¢
Thanks everyone for the thoughts so far! I'm definitely sending in the 1886 Liberty nickel, 1925 Canadian nickel, 1880H Dime and the 1927 Italian 20 Lire (had it appraised by three local dealers, and it's a $700 BV coin...but I think it could use a trip to NCS to get rid of a couple nasty spots.) I was on the fence about the 1914 D (as you said, for verification), the 1909 S/S, and the 1939 DDR. The 1912 D...well, that was just a "happy to have it, because it looks much better in hand than it does in the photo" post. I wonder if the Bremerhaven is worth sending in as well?
But neither of the Canadian coins is likely to be slabbed and graded. One, if not both, has been harshly cleaned and the other is damaged. But OK.
Just as a quick update on this thread: Canadian 1925 nickel is coming back from NGC in an XF45 slab. Big smile, as I got it from a coin shop for .25... Italy 20L 1927 is coming back from NGC, also in an XF45 slab. It's real...so a great buy at melt (what I paid for it.)
