I'm curious if people who know Chinese coins think this seller has real Chinese coins or not? There's one I'm interested in but you know how it is with Chinese stuff. https://www.ebay.com/itm/3544745282...Iw0AOT_TIK&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY
What you do is look it up in the Krause Cat. Then see what they go for in an auction. If it is genuine, it is worth $20 to me all day long. That ought to give you a clue one way or the other.
I don’t see anything inherently wrong with the coin that is pictured. I will be the first to admit that while I have seen tons of those coppers, I stick to square hole cash pieces. I don’t see any other coins from the seller to make a general observation of what the seller sells. My only observation is that a lot of the seller’s transactions are private and with the same buyers/sellers. That, to me, always gives me reservation.
The reasons for my concern besides what I already mentioned were that the seller seems to have almost all unusual Chinese coins for sale and their profile picture is an attractive woman. This is the coin I'm actually interested in, as these seem to go cheaper at auction than as buy it now, but I'm cautious of fakes. https://www.ebay.com/itm/3544701590...RU&osub=-1~1&crd=20221226200302&segname=11010
I should say though that when I look at the coin on my PC instead of my phone the photos don't look great. I feel like it's been cleaned, and not that well.
It’s definitely been scrubbed harshly. That is a coin I rarely see or hold personally, so, I don’t know. But, I would guess genuine, but harshly cleaned.
The texture of that coin looks very suspicious to me, like it's either fake or whizzed to death. But I shouldn't comment because I have no idea what a real one looks like.
I don't know for sure, but I think you are right to be cautious. Someone who specializes in rarer or nicer Chinese coins is not so likely to sell them on eBay not in slabs. I vote stay away.
I think I'll pass on this one. Thanks for the opinions. They have a lot of interesting coins that I haven't seen before though.
Aside from the obvious scraping, the texture looks sorta like a cast fake to me. I suppose it could also be acid damage. I also have no idea what a real one looks like though. I’m generally suspicious of a lot of Chinese coins on eBay, even the relatively common square-hole cash I’ve started collecting. There are so many contemporary and modern counterfeits. I can only tell half of the time whether one I’m looking at on eBay appears genuine… lol.
I don't believe it's genuine. Questionable patina and details When a seller tries to sell questionable rarer stuff with cheap genuine stuff, that's when you vote with your money and not support sellers like them.
