(If you do not like Daniel Carr Overstrikes, *please* do us all a favor and refrain from posting your opinions on the legality or lack thereof... let's all be adults here. Thanks!)

Do you think that they all will have the same resale value once they are sold out?

    • Bulk-Handling Finish, MS-63 grade, Die Pair 1 Brilliant Satin (sold @ $85)
    • High-Grade Finish, Die Pair 1 Brilliant Satin (sold @ $115)
    • High-Grade Finish, Die Pair 2 Proof-like (sold @ $135)

I'd like to see your reasoning behind the opinions, or this is just a guessing game thread.

I'll have to say to early to tell. The Satin and the Proof should both keep a premium over the bulk handled, but the final mintages between the two high grade could end up playing a big role. The one advantage that the proof may have is that most people will never own a high grade proof Morgan and this would be a cheaper alternative.

I would say that I really don't care what the potential is. I'm in this hobby for the pleasure of collecting what I enjoy. If I worried about potential future value I would be dumping all my discretionary cash into something other than coins and DC overstrikes. :)

Doug, I personally do not collect them but to answer your questions, I'd need a crystal ball. It's very difficult to answer a question like that. I get the same question in my antique business: "What do you think will be more valuable in the future that's reasonably priced today?" If I knew the answer to that, I'd be hoarding it myself. I know it's not what you want to hear but I'm being honest.

physics-fan3.14 You got any more of them.... prooflikes?

I think the results of that recent mega-thread was that telling the other side they couldn't post wasn't allowed.

Once this finally gets settled in court and these are declared illegal, the resale value will be zero.

This question isn't so cut and dry. Sometimes the bulk-handled go for as much as high graded or proofs. Sometimes high grade go for more than proofs sometimes it's the reverse. A lot of it depends on what's available at any given time and how popular the issue is.

Fyi, towards the end of the run Dan has indicated he will most likely do a clashed version of the 64d Morgan which will be sold on his site just like every other issue so keep your eyes open. If he only does a select small quantity they can sell-out quickly

I don't see how the bulk-handled versions could ever exceed the value of the high-grade versions -- if that happens, it's easy enough for anyone to throw a high-grade example into a bag of nickels and shake it around for a while to produce a bulk-handled version.

I do admit that it's slightly tempting to produce a few heavily-worn examples, just for lowball pride of place. Not by circulating them as legal tender, of course. ;)

    doug444 STAMPS and POSTCARDS too!

Correct me if I'm wrong on this -- there's a similar situation in the publishing business. When you BUY a book and own it, in your hands, you can carve it up, chapter by chapter or page by page, and sell it; the author or publisher has absolutely no recourse against you, regardless of copyright.

I can't imagine Overstrikes ever being illegal, UNLESS DHS (or the courts) come to view them as financing terrorists, or they publish a threat, or they support acts of treason. There IS a limit to "free" speech, but it would be a long reach for those pieces typically created now, IMHO.

So everyone else should respect your request to be "adults", but it's perfectly acceptable for you to schmuckishly insult, disrespect, and label those who happen to feel differently than you do? Very classy, Doug.

Given the option of a high grade or proof and a bulk-handled being offered at the same time the bulk-handled should go for less. Although I have seen bulk-handled sell for as much as high grade or proof issues if bulk-handled is all that is available at the time.

That makes more sense as an isolated incident where there were no other options available.

I got into Carrs late and own only one of his Morgan '64 overstrikes. I sort of wish I could buy one of his Peace overstrikes but they are sold out.

Having said that, this potential buyer is not interested in paying a secondary market price for one. I wonder how many others have the same view, since future prices are the question here.

The point was, Doug, that when applying a term that suggests ignorance and bias to those who simply feel differently, you're asking for the very thing you're hoping to avoid.

I know the current "Hyped" market. I also know what happens long term to "coins" that aren't really coins, made by private minters. They always go to melt. This is why there are so many negative comments about these, real coin collectors don't collect them unless they're real coins.
