Gentleman down at the local coin shop advised that with the price of gold today, unless your gold coins are of a rare variety, it isn't worth having them graded even if they are in good shape. The collection I inherited has about 25 gold coins ranging from the late 1800's to early 1900's, most are in really great shape, bought in the 70's, and cared for over the years. Some have been given ratings, some have not. Some that have not look as good (to me) as those that have. I have noticed looking through the Red Book that with some of these the prices are quite a bit higher on the coins that have been given an MS rating.. Opinions, was the guy at the shop full of it?

Second question. Wouldn't UN-circculated coins that have been cared for be equal in quality to those with MS ratings?

Three. Who can recommend a good book with the basics of coin collecting, how to care for them, how to go about having one graded ect. A good book that can hold my attention. ;)

    Thank you all.
