I realize this is not the best example, but I would like an opinion on grade and net for the scratch. These are hard to find in my budget and I cannot afford to purchase a higher grade coin. It's ok to be brutal, just be honest, or is it the other way around? Value estimate would be appreciated also. Thanks... Mike
Well, if you take away the scratch I really like the color as it seem original and natural. There is plenty of detail left on what I think is the best eagle design. I don't like the wear pattern on the obverse liberty. I am not great at grading this series but I'd guess around VG8 and maby net it to G04 for the scratch.
The grade doesn't matter in this case. The damage (scratch) is too severe. Save your money until you can afford a better coin. And I don't mean a better grade, just an undamaged one.
I would give it a g4 details, an ag3 net, a nice coin, someday I might have one also, but not if i cant keep my wallet in my pants,
Definitely has original look to it. That is what I love about 1800's coins to me it is like a little time machine. Can you imagine where it has been and what travels it has done.
I agree with Kanga. For price I would probably put it in the 40 to 60 range with the damage. That range might even be high. The scratch is really distracting to me in the case. Also like the others the color looks good to me in the pictures. As hard as it is and I know you want to fill a hole, I think you should wait for a problem free AG to G coin. Just my opinion.
I agree with Mark. I have never liked the idea of "net grading" a coin because of damage because you are assigning a grade value to the damage. In this case, the coin's damage is so detracting it really takes away from it. I would call this coin G4 Details, Scratched. I would save your money and find a nice undamaged example. Trust me, you will be much more satisfied. I have a couple coins like this I bought years ago and every time I look at them I wish I had waited for a better example.
Thanks for the honest comments. Thats what i asked for. I paid $56 for the coin, knowing it had a scratch. In hand it dosen't look so bad, but it really jumped out when I took the photo. I have a return privelage so I guess I'll package it up and return it.
Really, I would think about keeping it. I don't have one yet, and just for the sake of a type set, this example would be good enough for me (given my collecting budget). It is a neat piece of American coinage history, so as long as it is not a counterfiet...it's an investment in my book.
I would consider that not to be an unreasonable price. But I think someday you'll want to upgrade to a better coin and I don't think you'd get your money back, especially counting in inflation.
I think the coin is fine, especially for the money spent. Yeah it would be better if it had a little more detail on the front, but the reverse is nice. The scratch is not that bad to me and looks old.
The scratch is distracting, but even problem coins need a home, and this would be a decent coin in a lower budget collection. I say VG-8 details.
The scratch ain't hat bad. Put a little spitula between your thumb and forefinger and give it a gentile even rub and it might almost disappear.
