Taking time and doing a full inventory is VERY helpful. I keep discovering errors. One of my new rules is that a coin doesn't go into the new inventory unless I physically hold it in my hand. I'm discovering that there are coins I apparently no longer have -- or never had. Fortunately that most often involves duplicates and my assumption is that I sold one of them. But one thing I just found out is that I had "invented" a coin that doesn't even exist. And I had it in my old inventory. About 1866 the US mandated that the motto "In God We Trust" appear on their coins. So it's normal for there to be two varieties of most of the designs -- with and without "In God We Trust". One exception was the Quarter Eagle ($2.50) coin. The motto was never added to this issue. But my inventory says I have one with the motto Well, I now no longer have one (RATS!) NEW RULE FOR ME: Pay attention to the catalog! Nice part is I now have a duplicate I can sell.
I recently started doing an inventory also. After 40 years of accumulating I'm surprised at some of the things that I find. I'm also surprised at the value that the collection has grown too
I'd have to spend the rest of my life to inventory the bulk coins I have. That's not gonna happen. As I sort them I take a quick look for major mint errors, otherwise they get entombed in a glass jar to be used as a future trebuchet projectile in case all is lost ... or for the cu coin counter
I don't intend to hi-jack this thread but is the annual pumpkin-launching contest using full-size trebuchets still being held?
Gettin' old is a terrible thing......... Ya know the saying I hate the most? "He's forgotten more than you'll ever know"......I feel so 'fuzzy'.
