I found this coin going through some spare change one day as you can see it has an engraving? of the state of Wisconsin I've never seen this before, if anyone can give me some info on this it would be great. Ever since I found this now I want all 50 "State Pennies" EDIT: its a 1978
I can't really tell from your photo, but I have 4 pennies that have a picture of Kennedy engraved in about the same place. I vaguely remember some company taking regular pennies and engraving them back in the 70's.
It had been counter stamped. That is post mint damage and the coin is worth 1¢ if it is post 1982 and about 2¢ if it is pre 1982. BTW, it would be entirely possible to find all 50 states were you to look long enough.
My local dealer was trying to sell a set of 70's cents with each state counter stamped on it. All housed in a cardboard holder and frame. He had a price of $10 on it for at least a year. I think he ended up selling it for $5. Ben
There is a market for everything. If we could just find it when we have the something to sell. That is a lot easier said than done. I had a set of glassware with inserts. Tried to sell them for $10 each on eBay. No luck. 2 for $10. No luck. All six for $10. No luck. About a month later, I tried again at 6 for $10 and they went for $111. Go figure.
Not a bad deal at all, but I'm not much into modern counter stamped coins so I passed on it. The frame was also rather beat up so not really suitable for display. In general, I don't think there is a huge market for modern counter stamps, although I'm sure I could have resold it on Ebay for a profit.
Lot's of people collect counter stamped coins, they are worth more than 1 cent to the right person. Here's a couple I recently found while searching:
Last year searching cent rolls, I came across about a dozen different state/counterstamped 1976 cents someone dumped. I figured for face they are cool, and stashed them in the safe. They are interesting if nothing else. :thumb:

Hmm...maybe there's a market for my 4 Lincoln "looking at Kennedy" pennies that were in the BU bag I got at the last coin show.
i know this is a very old thread, but i was just doing some research on this subject since i recently found a 1978 ohio engraved penny. here's an auction on ebay for an entire collection of 1976 souvenir engraved state pennies: (not my auction) http://www.ebay.com/itm/Land-of-the...22?pt=Coins_US_Individual&hash=item5ad5ed10f6
