That's so-called "Spade Money", produced in China, but circulated freely in Japan (and possibly Korea) as well. The closest match I could find in the JNDA catalog has a similar shape, no hole in the handle, and different calligraphy, but it's listed as bronze, with a condition-adjusted value of ¥20-70,000 ~(US$180-630). That type of money had ceased circulating by the beginning of the Tokugaw period in 1603.
