I received this golden dollar from Wal-Mart from a special campaign to market the new dollar coin. The promotion failed. But, the coin lives on. I've carried it in my pocket for five years. Coin received Jan 31, 2000.
Wow!...An actual CIRCULATED SAC coin...never saw one in actual circulated condition. I love the SAC reverse, but the obverse should have been this...actually this reverse is nice too!: http://home.earthlink.net/~smalldollars/dollar/2000ml.html Really, somebody explain to me (without the PC argument) WHY they went with SAC on the obverse when then could of have had this design?? I would love to listen to the logic behind this decision. Here's currrent pending legislation in Congress regarding OUR dollar coin: http://home.earthlink.net/~smalldollars/dollar/hr3916.html That's just great The thought of ALL of the presidents gracing our coins is something that may make me give collecting dollar coins. Let's see, the images of Polk, Taft, Hayes, Coolidge and Please express your opinions on contemporary political matters elsewhere. on OUR dollar coins!?!. Somebody STOP the madness!!
Presidential coins vs valualble women The presidential coin program sound interesting. More interesting is the fact that they want to make the bullion coin the spouses. Making the ladies more valuable than the men (can't wait to see feedback on this comment). I didn't see anyting in the legislation about presidential mistresses- Perhaps thats the platinum coin
well ,, I dont think that question can be answered away from the PC , should current legislation carry , the fact that the First lady coins will be the more valuable and thus the thinking the more collectable,, shows the direction that has been in play since the SBA dollar, By the way Can anyone tell me which coin was the first to be designed by a female ?
Hey, Ed. Thanks for posting a link to my photo. This is a Gallery Mint Museum Concept Dollar and the reverse was actually considered as one of the 4 finalists for the Sac $1. These are now considered to be a private mint issued pattern coin. The Gallery Mint produced 2500 of these, and also 2500 with the Statue of Liberty obverse. They were offered to the public at $25 each. Who new they would end up being private mint pattern coins? I should have bought more. Oh, well.
John Flanagan Designed the Quarter dollar ,, with William Cousins being added to the state quarters as well as JF,,, I believe that the SBA was the first coin to depict an actual female person and the SAC dollar was the first to have a design by a woman designer to be used ,the obverse was designed by Glenna Goodacre.
I got 2 sacs about 5 years ago too! I got them from a local mini-market...since they were begining to circulate when the owner received them from the bank he didn't knew what to do so he gave them 2 me! both are AU50! I wasn't REALLLLLY into US Coins back then...but I thought "hey this is cool!...a 2000 (p & d) coin dollars?!?!" lol hehe
I saw this one at the FUN Show slabbed by ICG and the dealer was asking $250 for it. It was beautiful! Both him and I agreed that this coin should have been used and the only reason why they put SAC on the obverse was to be totally politically correct...nothing more. What a shame! A total shame...
I don't know if that was sarcasm or not, but is it really that big a deal to find circulataed SACS. If so, my wife and I have a few we've received..She wants to save them...
It was not sarcasm as most SAC's only see circulation when you get change from USPS machines. To see a SAC "that" worn and circulated is rare. Next time I will not exult or state "Wow!" My only sarcasm was directed toward the idea of all US Presidents gracing dollar coins Living and recently deceased ex-Presidents are contemporary political figures. Please discuss politics somewhere else. Also, President's spouses have no place on US coins!!
Surprisingly even my local coin dealer gave me a funny look when I paid him with all sac dollars, I sometimes go to the bank and buy rolls or coin tray SACs and SBA's and spend them around town,, I have clerks and checkers ask me for them when I go thru the line.
I may be all wrong but, I know of a silver Comm. half-dollar minted in 1926 that was designed ( at least in part) by a woman. It would be the Oregon Trail Commemortive coin. James Earl Fraser ( the guy who did the Buffalo) and his wife Laura Gardin Fraser. As I understand it, he did the Indian and she did the Covered Wagon. Hope this helps. And there may be others!
I'm fairly sure that there is at least one oher classic commemorative half dolar that was designed by a woman. Plus don't forget about the modern commems that were designed by Elizabeth Jones, the first one being the Washington half dollar. It predates the Sac dollar by something like 17 years.
kiyardo, I have been carrying a Sackie since Jan. 31, 2000 as well. All the luster is gone but it is MY first Sackie (from Walmart of all places) and I decided then and there to see how well they would wear. I added another a few weeks later so no matter what happens I will always be worth $2.10 as I carry a buffalo nickel and a Canadian nickel as well. Don't ask me why other than the fact I have money from two countries with me all the time or perhaps I can say "I have a beaver in my pocket?"
Terry, Wow. You got yours from the same place I got mine, and on the same day. It would be interesting to see how they compare in wearability. Would you care to scan the Sac dollar and post the images here to compare? Thanks, Kiyardo
Yes there are several commerative pieces that have been designed by women designers, those mentioned and the cincinnati music center byconstance ortmayer,, but speaking specifically of circulation coinage, coins that were made to be used by the general population ,,how many were designed by female designers ?
