Do you have any coin-themed decor in the house? This one adorns the wall above my desk, where I do all my coin-collecting:
That's very nice! Quite tasteful. I had some less tasteful coin decor but it was ruined by a couple of hurricanes. Both can be restored though and it's on the repair list Shrine to Venus Cloacina, guest bathroom: I need to reprint the photo since it was waterlogged and mildewed. The votive candle broke and has to be replaced. Diorama of Elagabalus and the transport of the sacred stone: The background photographs were ruined, as were the eagle and drink umbrellas. The potato was eaten long ago and had been replaced by a rock. The rock survived . This was in my foyer.
This is my inspiration for Ancient Chinese coinage. I have traveled on business (and pleasure) throughout China many times over my career since the 80's. I met a quite famous artist performing contract design work for one of my facilities. He asked if I would like one of his works. He painted it on the SPOT when I requested a mythical Shang Dynasty Emperor (1600-1046 BCE). This painting is approx 60" x 30" Awesome work. I placed it into museum glass, archival paper backing, bamboo frame, etc. Since I do not read Chinese, I often wonder what he REALLY wrote on the painting, and if he ever played any jokes on me.
I had a poster of coins from each emperor and usurper that I bought from Frank L. Kovacs, a noted SF-based ancient numismatist, back in the 80's. It adorned my room. I was a kid at the time. Don't know what happened to the poster but it was pretty cool.
I got this little framed papyrus in Syracuse - it's on the top of the stairs in my place. ATB, Aidan.
In Roman times, you might have been blamed for the hurricane by making Venus upset enough she asked Neptune to 'take care' of you. This might be evidence she prefers Poo-Pouri brand to No.2. We need to be very attentive to details when dealing with Divas like Venus.
I have a oak (?) framed antoninianii of Gordian III and Tetricus I in my cubicle at work. It was one of those expensive World Wide Treasure packages - I got it for around $10 on eBay. I was going to remove the coins, but it actually makes an okay display, I think. I've posted it before - somebody (Doug, I think) noticed the coins are reversed in relation to the attributions (but since the capsules are different sizes I can't correct this). The Gordian is pretty nice (Hercules reverse) but the Tetricus is awful - unrecognizable reverse, lots of crud. You'd think what they charged for this thing originally they could've come up with a nicer one. Note the certificate of authenticity!
Always a treat to see these again. Your Venus of the Great Drain or "the sewer goddess" inspired me to get the one below. L. Mussidius Longus AR denarius 42 BC CONCORDIA,diademed and vieled head of Concordia right 2 statues of Venus Cloacina on platform with balustrade of shrine of Venus Cloacina Crawford 494/42b; Mussidis 6; Syd 1093a
great thread @Roman Collector ! @TIF , I am an engineer and had to buy a sewer coin. My wife and I were discussing your potato mlp diorama when we bought a mlp unicorn for a young girl we know. My mancave has a bookshelf with a few items: a Nero button and Alex Great charm sold as coins on ebay; a wedding medal, a large medal given to me at work, some oil lamps, and other good stuff. I also picked up a CNG calendar recently.
I have this map of the ancient Mediterranean showing all of the mints that struck coinage depicting the gorgoneion.
