Are there any on-line pricing guides (free, preferably) that contain accurate prices of coins? I tried to use the PCGS FMV guide which is on their web-site and it seems the prices on there are very over-stated (I would guess by as much as 20-25%). Any thoughts?

I use the Coin World site (subscription) and find the CoinValues site to be pretty close to a retail reality.

But for a snapshot of prices that are accurate, you may be relegated to buying a magazine that lists the current prices for coins.

Unfortunately, you are not going to find one retail price guide that will accurately reflect retail prices for all coin series. The PCGS online guide is not a bad resource, but you are correct, the prices are often on the higher side. Coin World Trends is not bad either, but like CohibaChris mentioned, it costs money.

One of the best resources for determing the fair market value of a particular coin is the Coin Dealer Newsletter, which is commonly known as the Greysheet. It lists wholesale buy and sell prices and you can easily determine retail prices by adding 10% - 20% to the sell prices listed. Like Coin World Trends though, a subscription is required.

The Web site for the Greysheet is http://www.greysheet.com/

About the only way to get fairly accurate retail pricing for coins is to search the realized auctions results. Ebay is by far the easiest, then Heritage & Teletrade - but you can check realized prices for all the major auction houses.
