There were a surprisingly large number of Canadian cents that seemed to circulate pretty freely even though technically the were worth less than US. This was what started me collecting in the first place. They seemed very exotic to a young mind and conjured up images of a far away place. I rarely get one in change anymore.

LOL :p I picked up a bunch of us coinage in Bermuda, which has its own coinage but barely uses it lol...I peeked into the cash register and saw no Bermudan paper money in it...I had to go to the national bank to get them (I got a $10, $5, $2 bill and a $1 dollar. I also found a quarter, 4 dimes, and a bermudan nickel in change

Getting this thread back on track -

When I was young (read - in grammar school) a Walker was big bucks - equal to about 3 weeks' allowance - but they circulated freely; along with silver Mercs and Washington quarters, cu-ni Jefferson nickles, and copper (yes - real copper) Wheaties.

Last fall my daughter got a Japanese 1922 or 1923 5 Sen back in change. The casher thought it was Canadian, LOL :D

    coins 1940-

I am sixty five. When I was young I lived and still do on San Francisco Bay CA. We were a large Military hub and all sorts of coins turned up. Wheaties,an occassional indian head , Quarters halves and silver dollars. I always remember searching the sofa for coins. My uncle use to come to visit and would bring me a coin or two in a cardboard holder. He liked the bay area because of the mint and the change traffic. He would buy coins at the court house from probate sales. They bid and if they got the coins it was usually a dollar or two from face value. Not much of that now. In those days someone without a will was common.

    Be well

my grandma was also born in 1940...she said she remembers bringing $2 to Boston each weekend and having lunch, ride the bus, get lunch, and go to a double feature. She also remembers when buffalo nickels, mercury dimes, and sl quarters circulated freely

I actually didn't get interested and start collecting until later in life. When I was young all I saw were Quarters, Dimes, Nickels and "Pennies" and they only lasted as long as it took you to run to the local soda shop. Half Dollars and Paper money came only when you were really good. You mean there were different types??

lol, I've been interested in coins all my life. I began when I was 4 by counting 50 pennies and rolling them :p

When I first started collecting you could find almost any silver coin in circulation, some a lot less often than others. I had a couple dozen Morgans from circulation but oddly never did find a Peace dollar. Morgans were at the bank for the asking. Standing Liberty quarters were another - think I only ever ran across one of them. Barbers every now n then. For halves, Walkers and Frankies. Rarely saw the Kenndy halves unless ya went to the bank, everybody hoarded them. Indian cents only once in a while - never a large cent of course. And never a 3 cent or 2 cent - not ever. With nickels there were Liberties, Buffs and of course Jeffs. Never found a dime older than a Barber.

Yah, but Doug, you'r really old! I've spoken to Morgan Dollar and should have told him that his grandmother is just a little older than my daughter. So from now on for him not to think of his grandmother as 'old'.:thumb:

I can remember Franklin Halfs and Walking Liberty's, but my favorite were the steel pennies. It seemed as though daily back in the 1950's they would turn up in my pockets.

Morgan and Peace silver dollars were yours for the asking. Just go to the bank.

I remember my aunt who was a dealer at the Harolds Club in Reno gave me a nice shiny Morgan dollar. I immediately went to the grocery store and bought a dollars worth of candy with it!
