I am a big fan of collecting graded Jefferson nickels. A trend I have been seeing is that most older (1938-1945) dates that are graded MS67 are almost always in an old NGC holder. There are newer holders out there and some PCGS coins at MS67, but most I see are the old NGC holders. I buy frequently at the Great Collections website and the older NGC coins seem to sell for less than newer NGC holders or PCGS holders. Also, the population report usually shows a lot more MS67's from NGC than PCGS. This makes me wonder if these coins may be overgraded by today's standards...Any thoughts?
I don't collect Jeffersons, but my thoughts are to grade the coin yourself. In your opinion, does the grade match the TPG's opinion? If yes, and you can get it for a good price, buy the coin.
Yeah, I usually do buy the coin, not the.holder, but its just an observation I have made. PCGS created themselves so that coins could be.bought sight-unseen and still be.confident with what you are getting. I have lost some faith in older NGC slabs recently due to possible overgrades and lower auction price realizations. I am a bigger fan of PCGS anyways. I feel they have been more conservative over the years. Just my opinion though... Sent from my ADR6425LVW using Tapatalk
With some coin series PCGS is more conservative than NGC when grading. With some coin series NGC is more conservative than PCGS when grading. That, is the truth of the matter.
I mean, is there a particular series you have noticed, in your opinion? Sent from my ADR6425LVW using Tapatalk
I think NGC is more strict on most gold coins, not all of them, but most. NGC is tougher with all of the special designations than PCGS is. And I believe NGC is tougher on Walkers than PCGS, and often Frankies too. That's a few.
