My mom and I visited New Zealand recently and it was right around the time of their currency change, so we now have coins which are no longer 'good' or in circulation, are these valuable?

Possible, but more info is needed.

I'll have to get them from home to get more info. I know that no stores would take them and I assume many people turned them into the mint for the new coins as to not lose money

The last years are rather difficult to find and there are numerous varieties which were made in very large numbers but don't appear in mint sets so are quite scarce in nice condition.

Generally typical coins in typical condition don't have much value but there are some here which can be found in very atypical condition.
