I purchased a couple of large cents this weekend. They haven't arrived yet, but I thought that I'd post an initial photo in case anyone knew which Sheldon variety it was.

It has a lettered edge and is supposed to be a 1795 (not sure till it's in hand), so I'm assuming that it's either a 73, 74, 75 or 76a. There seems to be a lot of space between the hair & letters though, so I'm not sure. Is that something that varies coin to coin or is it one of the indicators used to determine the Sheldon #. Better pics available in a couple of days once they arrive.

Also, since I intend to continue to collect these large cents, what books would you guys recommend? Thanks!

    No clue, but nice.

    You should show the reverse.

I could post it, but you can barely see the reverse from the pic that I have available right now. (Better pics will be posted in a day or two.) I picked up both large cents and a few buffalo nickels for $100. I wasn't sure on value, but thought that seemed like a good deal.

That's not a 1795, it's a 1794. either S-28 or 29 (They both use the same obv die). Both fairly common. But you did good. If the reverse isn't damaged (or smooth) it's probably a $160 to $200 coin.
