Hello all, I found this coin while in Germany. It is very thin, slightly smaller than an American penny, and it is dated 1819. I have attached 2 photos to this post that will hopefully aid in the identification. Any help is greatly appreciated!
That’s not a German coin, its a 1998 Lincoln cent. Oh…the OTHER coin. Looks sort of weird to me. Parts of it are strong and parts are not there, as if it were worn. But, this does not jibe with the strong parts. Also, why is that shield empty? Looks like something belongs in that area. Also, is there any evidence of casting? Parts of it look rough, and there seems to be a line through the shield area. In short, I have no idea what it is. Maybe someone else knows. I am just giving you my initial reactions – but sometimes first impressions are important.
Imperial German coinage doesn't exist until the 1870's, so to be a German coin it would have to be from one of the 61 German States (Aachen through Wurzburg) that take up 130 pages of the 19th Century Krause 3rd Ed. The photos aren't clear enough to read any legends on the coins, so if there are any readable ones, please post them.
I found the coin - it is an 1819 "1 Pfenning" coin from Frankfurt Am Main, Germany - not much value maybe a dollar or 2
