The inscription on the one side (left) says "Entdeckung der Heilquellen in Teplitz", I think. (Teplitz is the German spelling of Teplice, a spa in the Czech Republic; back then it was in Austria-Hungary.) That text means "Discovery of the medical source in Teplice", plus the year 762. On the other side it says "Zur Erinnerung an die elfhundertjährige Jubelfeier", ie. "In memory of the eleven hundred year celebration", plus the year 1862.

Teplice was a spa where many royals and other "celebs" went at that time. But the discovery in 762 is probably a legend, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Teplice. The piece is not a coin but a medal. However, a nicely designed one ...

And leave it black. It looks great just the way it is.

Agreed. If you know that you will keep it forever, then you may of course clean it, but this way you may damage the surface. So in case you plan to sell it, don't attempt to make it "look shiny". Here is a dealer in Munich, by the way, who wants almost €200 for such a medal. (In better condition though.) http://www.muenzgalerie.de/kataloge/pdfs/muenzgalerie_imk170_3_altdeutsche_muenzen_medaillen.pdf

Go to page 59 (p. 11 of the file) - at the top you see the piece. A little further below is a short description. Karl Fischer was apparently the designer, and G. Loos (Berlin) was where the medal was made.

Very nice medal. I like the one the poster has more than the nice shiny one in the linked catalog;)
