Welcome to the Hobby of Kings, and the best discussion forum about it.

If you have a large number of pre-20th Century coins you might ask your library about using an inter-library loan to get the volumes of the Standard Catalog of World Coins covering the 17th-19th Centuries.

If the volume isn't too great you can post clear pictures here, and some of us with those volumes will try to help you. The condition of each coin is a major factor in valuing it, so pictures that show detail are essential.

One thing you must keep in mind is that the SCWC, like every other printed price guide, is only a guide and usually out of date by the time it is published.

thankyou. well i determined that (according the book) that most of these coins are xf. condition. nothing special abut them. the lib. doesnt have any other books that i can use as i tried already. Austria - 1881 & 1885 1 Kreuzer, 1895 10 Heller, Colombia 1881 2 1/2 centavos, France 1900 10 centimes, this japan coin i think is 1873-1884 (year 15) 1-Rin, last 2 are Mombasa 1888H & 1888CM 1 pice. if this is too many ill understand and thankyou for your time.

You missed my point. Public libraries have a vast network through which they temporarily exchange books on what they call "Inter-library loans". With that system just about any library has access to almost any book, at least for short term non-circulating use.

Anyhow, XF is valued in the 2001 3rd Ed. 19th Century volume of the SCWC (not the most recent edition) as follows:
    • Austria 1881 1 Kreuzer, KM#2186, $1.50, mintage 37,900,000
    • Austria 1885 1 Kreuzer, KM#2187, $1.25, mintage 29,000,000
    • Austria 1895 10 Heller (1.25 Kreuzer), none listed
    • Colombia 1881, 2 1/2 centavos, KM#169, $30, mintage 123,000
    • France 1900 10 centimes, KM#843, $8, mintage 5,000,000
    • Japan 1882 1-Rin, Y#15, $8, 3,632,000
Mombasa is now known as Kenya. There are multiple varieties of the 1 pice, minted at Birmingham ("H") and Calcutta ("C/M") for the British East India Company in 1888. Without pictures it's impossible to guess which ones you have, and even with pictures it may not be possible for someone with no expertise in the series to attribute or evaluate them.

Well, if you don't think you will ever get into coin collecting as a hobby, you might as well sell it, as long as it has no sentimental value to you.

If you think you might enjoy this hobby, I would start organizing and cataloging the collection. It'll give you a lot of first-hand experience.

Even if you decide to sell it, you ought to organize it anyway as it'll be easier to sell, and you'll know at least what the value is (approximately) so that you get a fair price for the collection.

I guarantee that he seriously overpaid for any that he didn't get in one of their "introductory specials".

I'm afraid my knowledge of Mombasa varieties is too skimpy to hazard an opinion on the one you posted.
