Hello, I was just wondering if anyone had any info on this token. I believe it is a Conder token but it is thin, the picture is compared to a US half. Any info about the token would be appreciated. Thanks
I am a collector of Conder Tokens, I think they are some of the most intersting of all coins: This one is English Lutwyche’s Birmingham (Warwickshire) halfpenny token obv: A figure of Justice seated, holding a pair of scales and a cornucopia with coins spilling out: “MEDALS & PROVINCIAL COINS” with “DEA PECUNIA” in exergue and “ENGRAVING AND DIE SINKING” on shield. Rev: Busts of George III and Queen Charlotte to left: “LONG MAY THEY REIGN OVER A GRATEFULL PEOPLE”. Issued by Lutwyche, manufacturer of tokens and medals. D&H Warwickshire No: 220 c 1795 last one of these I saw sold for a bit below 20 pounds but was in VERY fine condition
Have to say they are both quite striking, I also like & have a small collection of tokens, you can see my fav in my avatar De Orc
Drusus,I also collect Conder tokens as well.I didn't know that Lutwych's struck a 1/2d..I have got a Farthing, which depicts a coining press on the obverse. I also have got one of those Sir Isaac Newton 1/2d. tokens. They are very nice, but there's no indication of what town or county it is in.I have a strong suspicion that this was issued in Middlesex, like most anonymous tokens of the 1790's were. Aidan.
It is listed as Middlesex...I love the Druid Conder and I SHOULD have one but all the ones I come across arent as nice as I want. I am waiting until I find one that is still in great shape...for a good price
Drusus, the most well-known Druid's Head pieces are the ones issued by the Parys Mining Company for circulation on Anglesey.I have got a Druid's Head 1/2d. piece dated 1795 that has Britannia facing left instead of the 'PMCo' monogram.I originally thought it was from Anglesey, then someone told me that it could be from Cambridgeshire.I am not certain which. I like the Druid's Head coins,as their designs are very attractive. Aidan.
There is a Druids head token out of Angalsy with a Hanging man on the Reverse but it is very rare. and here are a few more quite distant from Angalsy LOL Cambridgshire 1/2d Obv: Beehive & Bees, Rev: Druids Head 1795 Edge- Cambridge, Bedford, Huntingdon Cornwall 1/2d Obv: Druids Head, Rev: Crowned Shield 1791 (also known in Bronze) North Wales (as opposed to Angalsy) believed to have been produced in Birmingham & underweight, there were also a number produced with a similar cypher LOL but it read RM Co & not PM Co again for use in North Wales Obv: Druids Head, Rev: Harp 1739 I am fairly certain that if we search we can come up with some more De Orc :kewl:
Steve, the pieces from North Wales & South Wales with the Prince of Wales feathers are actually not Druid's Head pieces.I have got a 1/4d. from both North Wales & South Wales. The obverse shows a laureate head facing right. That Druid's Head piece with the strung up man on it must be a very interesting piece. What denomination is it? 1/2d. or 1d.? I don't think Anglesey issued 1/4d. pieces at all. I'd be very glad once I get the British Commonwealth Numismatic Project finally up & running.I would like to learn how to use a digital camera so I can take the coolest coin photos. Aidan.
Aiden please re read what I wrote no mention of the Prince of Wales feathers LOL they have a Druids head on one side with a Harp on the other and were produced to look like the Parys tokens but were underweight, the others had a Cypher on them that is remarkably similar to the PM Co cypher. De Orc
If you have any pictures, I'd like to see some of these pieces. Other than your avatar of course. I have an affinity for Druids... Ben
^^ this is the quality I am looking for in a druid coin...this one is exceptional, its probaably considered the first type of Conder from the Parys Mine Company in Anglesey Wales. Here are some link for people wanting to look into conders. http://www.thecoppercorner.com/ http://www.conderclub.homestead.com/ http://thecondercabinet.homestead.com/ http://www.d-stuart.demon.co.uk/ http://www.wnccoins.com/0029.htm
Thanks for those links. Steve,I am not familiar with a Druid's Head piece with a Harp reverse.Have you got one? If so,can you please post some photos. Drusus, thanks for those links. Those are nice photos.I've never seen a token that is in Unc.I do have a Skidmore's 1/2d. with a forge that has lustre. Aidan.
The Druid with a harp is a North Wales issue, this one is in terrible shape, most druids I see are in rough shape...
the conder I most want to get my hands on AFTER I get a real nice Druid is this ant-slavery conder: "AM I NOT A MAN AND A BROTHER”. Reverse: Two hands joined in friendship: “MAY SLAVERY & OPRESSION CEASE THROUGHOUT THE WORLD”. What makes these Conders so great are they are indy issues thus they are not in any way held back by any governing body, subject matter the sky is the limit and they have some truly interesting designs that give a view into society at the time and peoples ideas and what concerns them...they make social statements, political statements, homage, and sometime they are just funny....some are complex in style and exceptional, others are rough and slap dash...some serious, some funny, always interesting and a statement from some business owner long gone...some are very odd and along that line I bring you: Adam and Eve and the Ass Headed Bull
Drusus,I have a rough one of those anti-slavery 1/2d. tokens. One of my favourite series is the John Wilkinson Iron Master 1/2d. pieces from Warwickshire.I have mostly got the Vulcan & anvil ones.I do have a hammer one,but have never seen any of John Wilkinson's forge ones. That is a very nice strung up man piece. It contains a reference to Thomas Paine, who is mentioned here; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Paine . Aidan.
