Hello Everyone. I have two examples of company/store scrip I am looking for some information on. Example #1: Buckhorn Furnace Store - 5 Cents Example #2: Superior Lime Co - 50 Cents After doing a bit of research on my own, I found a Buckhorn Furnace located in Lawrence County, Ohio. The following websites provide some interesting pictures and details about the Buckhorn Furnace location: http://www.oldindustry.org/OH_HTML/OH_Buckhorn.html https://www.lawrencecountyohio.com/furnaces/buckhorn-furnace/ When referring to the first website above, there is a 'Directions' section which says to use "North Buckhorn-Superior Road" to reach the Buckhorn Furnace. The interesting thing about that is the reference to Superior, which is in the name of the Example #2 scrip above. I have not had a chance to find much information about the Superior Lime Co., but suspect that it is in this same area. I'm not sure if either of these examples are shown in any available text, or if anyone has any information pertaining to their origin, rarity, value, etc. Any information is greatly appreciated and any discussion is encouraged. EXAMPLE #1 - OBVERSE EXAMPLE #1 - REVERSE EXAMPLE #2 - OBVERSE EXAMPLE #2 - REVERSE Thank You.
@SteveInTampa Thank you for the information. Obviously, both of the Buckhorn Furnace Store notes from Heritage Auctions are in a lot better shape than the one I have. Also, mine has no signature, etc. As for the Superior Lime Co. (Example #2 above), I would still appreciate any information anyone might have on it. As noted above, I believe it is located in the same region (Lawrence County, Ohio) as the Buckhorn Furnace store, but I'm not 100% on that. Also, does anyone know of a reference book for these old company/store scrip items? Thank You.
I found a reference to a Superior Lime Co. in Grand Rapids, Michigan in the early 1900s (1906, 1909, 1912). Homer L. Zipp founded the company in about 1904 as far as I can tell. Too early for your scrip I think since the date is 187- The company may have existed earlier since the history on it was very sketchy. It gives you something to research at least. Good luck, Steven!
