I was considering trying to buy this: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=270702106126&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT I can't seem to locate any info on its value online. I have seen other sellers asking for much more than this for lower grades (and yes, i know theres a difference between asking and getting). So, what are the pro's opinions on this coin? I know the Gold is worth like, what, $40? But you don't buy a coin like this to melt it down. Thanks
A damaged 1720 400 reis with more wear sold on Ebay for $189 last December. http://cgi.ebay.com.sg/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=160522901460
It's hard to tell with those older coins. I saw on a Portuguese-language version of CoinTalk that one of the members mentioned that the same date 400 reis coin, in at least the same condition but unslabbed, was being offered for 300 euros, or roughly $400. For comparison, a coin in what appears to be EF (and unslabbed) was appraised at about 150 euros, or roughly $200. http://www.forum-numismatica.com/viewtopic.php?style=2&f=4&t=48539 A 400 reis coin from 1720 in a January 2010 Heritage auction went unsold (listed as VF, but looks AU). http://coins.ha.com/common/view_item.php?Sale_No=3007&LotIdNo=1041 What it comes down to then is, basically, how badly you want that particular coin, how much discretionary income you are willing to lock up in it for several years, and whether or not you are expecting to make a return on your investment.
The only sale i could find was a auction back in 2008 and it went for $170. It wasn't graded, but looked to be in excellent condition in the photo. Found a seller in Portugal asking 400 Euros, which is over $500.
