I have about 5 coins I would like to get slabbed. NGC has a membership for $125 a year, that allows me 5 free submissions. Plus a return shipping fee of $20. So when it's all said and don'e I would be paying $150. However I do not know if the coin dealers get discounts, shipping discounts, etc. Would I be better off sending the coins in myself? Or going through a dealer? Thanks.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the bulk submission discount that dealers get doesn't apply when the coins are different dates and/or denominations. Chris
I wasn't really talking about a "bulk rate". But I thought maybe there was some sort of price advantage in submitting through them...or am I wrong?
You might have a hard time finding a dealer who would do that for you. Basically because they are doing you a favor at the expense of being responsible for your coin(s) after you drop it/them off with the dealer. It might happen, but you would have a better chance if you join a coin club, and let the coin club get a submission group together to benefit all. I would wait until you have at least 5-10 coins to grade that will grade well to do this. Then submit. Also, you might want to join the ANA as you get to submit to NGC based on that. The submission costs can be found at NGC's site, I believe. And if you go to a coin show that they are at, then you can cut out one way cost in shipping. Hope this helps.
I am pretty sure all they can do is help you out with the submission form, and submit your coin off to ngc. The rates will still be the same. The online submission form is much easier to use and straight foward.
You better have someone near you check and see if they are worth submitting. If they're not, I don't recommend it.
Only advantages would be possibly lower shipping cost because there would be more coins in the package to split the cost between. Of course on the other hand you may not get a break on the shipping and in effect be subsidizing the shipping of HIS coins. If you are submitting less than five coins a year there may be an advantage from not having to pay for a membership. There can be an advantage from not having to submit five coins at a time. And if you are sending to PCGS there can be a savings of the $8 per invoice fee scince many peoples submissions can be on the same invoice.
