Estimate is 200 EUR. I'll bet it goes for more. Alas, I shall be on the sidelines. I just can't swing it right now. But wow... check it out... Leopold "the Hogmouth" ... a great cityscape... then all those little medallions with ten captured fortresses on the reverse! Plus, it's big, at 40 mm, but not too big to fit into a standard PCGS holder. If one of you grabs this, you will have my congratulations and envy.
I don't know anything about this kind of stuff but that's really cool. Makes me want to go and look up all the history. I looked up just one fort and could not quit reading. Really fun.
Oh! Those miniatures are awesome! I had a friend on Collectors Universe discover that one of his pieces was a box thaler.
@Zohar444 - I respectfully solicit your opinion on this, since I know you've got the clout in this category. Hypothetically speaking, IF I were to sell enough stuff over the weekend to make a play for this, what ballpark range do you think I should bid in, if at all? I'll be the first to admit I know next to nothing here, except I love this design (and I could use a Hogmouth in the Eclectic Box, and some larger pieces.)
Hello, Segedin is a city in Hungaria called Szeged, Fünfkirchen = Pécs, Simonsturm = Simontornya, Siklos = Siklós, Pest = today part of Budapest capital of Hungaria, Kaposvár another Hungarian city
Fünfkirchen = Pécs Interesting. I don't speak German, but understand enough to know that "Fünf Kirchen" literally means "five churches". So I suppose Fünfkirchen/Pécs had five churches at one time. Checking Wikipedia, I found:
That is cool. Hopefully, you can snatch it up. @Zohar444 collection of Hogmouth got me to get several smaller denominations of hoggy in the late 2000s.
I've had some Hoggy minors in the past. Some of the small denomination coins can be had even in Mint State on a modest to middling budget. Not Zohar-class material, though!
Great eye, as always, Lord M! Just a stunning piece right there my friend (wish I could swing it myself). My first foray into the world of the Hog's mouth was a much more humble one. Here's a sweet 3 I picked up from Frank Robinson. Leopold I (The Hogsmouth) 3 Kr Silesia 1700 F+ Obv: Laureate portrait facing right in an inner circle, value in a frame below the bust. Lettering: LEOPOLDVS D G R I S (3) A G H B REX Rev: Crowned double headed imperial eagle in an inner cirlce. Mint mark below in legend, date divided above.Lettering: ARCHID AVS (CB) DVX BVR SIL
Hi all and @lordmarcovan - box thalers with inserts are very neat and there are varieties of them. I do not have a clue as to price, yet this should come much lower than a Thaler's price. My guess, 30% or so. So if the Taler is worth $500 in middle tier grade, then value should be $150-200. I may be off, yet I can't imagine this being more than this. Separately, I have that Hogmouth medal:
@Zohar444 - The box thaler topic was introduced by @Chris B. (And I don't mind at all- it was very cool.) But I was interested in your opinion of the medal in the OP. Why am I not surprised that you have a stunning specimen strike? Wow. No. Make that WOW.
Searching that "Montenuovo-975" on the Zohar specimen's label, I found another one listed at fixed price. And comparing that one to the example in the original post suggests that 1) the auction estimate of the piece in the OP is likely way low, as is so often the case, and 2) even if I scrambled to sell some stuff in order to allow myself a bid, I would almost certainly lose. Oh well. One day, perhaps.
Very nice medal. Definitely would not hurt to see if you can sell some coins to try for this. As for hogmouth coinage, so far i do not have a thaler, but do have several of 3, 6 kreuzer. (I think maybe a 15 kreuzer, as well). My only Habsburg thaler is one of Ferdinand II. Good luck, and hope things work out to where you can get this medal
