I'm sure others have gone or even still go through this, but I have always struggled with "shiny metal object syndrome". I think I just made that up, but I digress. Until recently I've considered myself to only be a casual collector and certainly not a real Numismatist, although I'm aiming to change that. My biggest problem has always been and still is to some extent, wanting everything new and shiny that I come across. The I have to have them all mentality. Which of course is pretty much impossible and certainly improbable especially given my financial situation. SO, I've been working hard to take notice of the things that seem to interest me the most and I think I've settled on a SMALLER list of things I want to focus on. As some of you may have noticed from other threads I've taken interest in Commemorative coins. I like how many of them have a story or event tied to them and some history. I'm a glutton for knowledge so this appeals to me. So Early and Modern Commem's are now officially on my collection list. I also have interest in coins with wildlife on them. This is a huge list, especially when you expand to world coins. I've decided to Narrow that list down to only Wildlife that is native to my home state of NH. We'll start there and see how it goes. The great thing about this is I can add to this collection for very cheap and sometimes face value. Lastly, Birth Year coins. This is just something to involve my kids and I always thought it was neat to try and collect as many birth year coins as possible. So I'll be working on these with my kids. I just wanted to share what I've hopefully finally narrowed my search down to and what's been plaguing me for so long......oh look a penny! PS - I thought of something else, Jeep related coins/medals/tokens but I think that goes without saying
@Jeepfreak81 , I too suffer from your newly labeled disease. I don't think any Pharma companies are working on a pill, so I'll have to rely on personal restraint, or I'll go broke. I have found that working on a Type Set helps sate this disease. It allows me to dabble in many different series and learn about them.
The only way for me is to just plain stop looking at auctions. I can always find a coin at auction that I would like to add.
This can be an interesting collecting idea, there are a fair number of people that collect their birth year. Doing it for just U. S. coins so is way too simple and is completed too quickly. Most serious birth your collectors try to acquire all the coins of their birth year from every country. Most of them will still be very cheap, but it can be a real challenge trying to find them.
That was my thought exactly. I was thinking it's a relatively affordable way to collect and keep my kids interested. 1 of them is real interested, 1 is not so interested, and the other is only 2 so he just thinks money is the greatest thing ever.
Well, I guess I am guilty of this syndrome. I love the silver proof Kennedy halves and the silver proof quarters. Cameos just light my fire. They have to be real silver though. They are pretty much at the top of my LMS, "lack of money scale" in my old age, but when I do get one, it is a kick. Just sayin.
