I have a ton of these coins, i have been saving them from the register at a chevron, for me I relly like the colors of these coins, i also have some that are green , gold , blue and purple. I was wondering if anyone could tell me why they turn these colors.

This is called toning.. basicaly its a tarnished coin but to some it is eye apealing it is caused from a number of things such as oils from your skin, air, chemicals, chemicals inside holders, and even heat.

there are ways to fake a tone because some like great toned coins. natural toning happens over time from natural contamenents in and around the coin... the coins metal reacts to these contamenents and you get a tarnished coin... or a toned coin...

Im sure if i left anything out one of the more advanced coin collectors will correct me :D

    The surfaces have toned.
Soaking them in dish washing liquid, is one possible cause.
    I'm sure there are others.

Many collectors believe that it takes a long time for natural toning to occur. Often, this is true. So when they see a recent date coin that is toned they assume it must be artificial toning. But if the conditions are just right - natural toning can occur very quickly - sometimes in a month or less.

Now many will say that if toning occured that quickly - then somebody helped it along. Often this is true, but this is not always the case. Many times an inexperienced collector will improperly store his coins not realizing at all what may happen. And when they next view them - they are greatly disappointed to find that they have toned. For not all collectors like toned coins.

Distinguishing natural toning from artificial is one of the most difficult things there is to do in numismatics. And there is no definitive or scientific method for doing so. It is always a matter of opinion based on experience.

Just something to keep in mind.
