Hey guys/gals ! Morning , hope all of you had a great Xmas . I have a coin I received and have a question . Does anyone have a chart for me to determine the percent of Off Center the coin is for future reference ? This one is marked 85% Off Center . Thanks !
Ditto. Sounds about right. A lot of the time I think it's guesstimation. I doubt there are any such charts- or if there are, I am unaware of them. Of course I'm not an error coin collector.
I've seen attempts at a few. They only covered one type of coin and one had to extrapolate to other series. I think it illustrated 5%, 15%, 25%, 35%, 50%, 65%, 75%, and 85%. I would be hard pressed to find it, but it might have been in an old Photograde book. Didn't some guy named Kolit publish a few charts for these? Z
Not exact, but here's what I do. Look up or measure the regular diameter of the coin. Let's call it d1. Then measure the distance along the planchet from the rim to the struck area (d2) (1-(d2/d1))*100 = % off center Since nearly all off centered errors are rounded to the nearest 5% (and a lot if people just eyeball it), the simple math will give you good answer Note: I don't measure the diameter of the struck portion because metal will flow beyond the normal coin diameter and if used, could slightly underestimate the %
