Hi... I was just curious if anyone knew the odds of getting a blank planchet (cent denomination if it matters). I just found my first after this week after searching approx. $260 in cents. whats the value (if any) Thanks!!

Has the planchet gone through the upset mill ? Does it have raised edges in other words ? If not value is about a dollar or two - if it does perhaps $3 - $4.

In order to calculate those odds you would have to know how many blank planchets escape from the mint, and how many of them get discarded by non-collectors who think they've found a slug.

Sufficie it to say - they aren't as common as well circulated 1982 cents (mintage 10,712,525,000 - highest in history for a single year/mint.)

Really a tuff one to answer. For one reason the Mint does not go around telling anyone how many they issue. Another one is I live in a rather industrial type area. I have known many individuals that work in shops where they make washers, nuts, bolts, etc. One of the things they do when not being watched is to make blank slugs out of copper, tin, zinc, etc. and use them in coin operated machines. These are eventually mixed in with normal coinage and distributed all over so what you may have found is one of those individuals handy work. If real usually as already noted about a few dollars.

I have received three blank planchets in change during my lifetime - 2 cents and 1 nickel. Very oddly, one of the cents and the nickel came from the same Burger King, about 2 years apart. The last one was over 20 years ago.
