Hi ~ My husband found an odd penny in his change yesterday and I was wondering if anyone had any idea what it could be. Hmmmm I can't seem to get my photo to upload so here is a link to see it on my blog... http://inkstainswithroni.blogspot.com/2010/03/curious-r-penny.html Anyway, I've never seen a penny or any coin for that matter stamped with an "R" in it much less two. Is this a reject coin because of the damage to Lincoln's head? Someone told me it might have something to do with a reproduction coin but it's dated 1998...don't see much point in reproducing something that is still in circulation and only with one cent. Any information will be greatly appreciated...we have a running bet on what it is LOL!!
I have a Lincoln penny with a small P stamped on it. I also have a V nickel with the #14 stamped on it. Not sure why.
Wild! I've never heard of such a thing before. I hope someone can tell us why these coins have things stamped into them.
Back in the Juke Box days, it was not uncommon for proprietors to mark their coins wich fingernail polish to distinguish "house money" from actual income (i.e. customer money) These coins are occasionally seen in Kennedy Half Dollar Rolls. Your coin obviously represents some type of reference or identifying mark. Or perhaps someone was just screwing around with a cent? Since anybody with a punch and hammer can do this for any reason at all, I don't really see anything special or significant with your coin just like there is nothing significant with finding a Kennedy Half with red fingernail polish on it. As for an "R" for "Reject"? The US Mint waffles rejected coins before shipping them back to whomever reclaims the metal. http://www.wafflecoins.com/ Have you husband continue to look though. Who knows, maybe he'll find a nice DDR 1983 Lincoln! If he does, folks will climb all over each other to get to it.
Maybe Rachael Ray, Ronald Reagan, Robert Redford, Rex Reed, Rob Reiner, Roy Rogers, Ray Romano, Roger Rabbit, Rolls Royce....
Well, I'm sorry I asked... I just figured you all seemed to know what was what in the coin world so I thought it would be fun to find out a little bit more about it. I'm not a coin guru and I've never seen anything like it before so I figured why not. Sorry to have bothered you all...
Roni, 19Lyds answer was right on in regard to your question. As for the other answers please don't take offence as we do sometimes (I'm guilty) get a little carried away. It's nothing personal really....
Hi Roni, from your blog above, you might have some interesting hobbies yourself to tell us about in the introduction subforum. There is an engraving/paper money forum here also that you might find interesting. Welcome to the forum. True some may have too much caffiene and sugar in their blood than is recommended, but most are very nice although may be slightly "different" people I don't know about the real intent for the initials, but when I sharpen up my punches after using on harder substances, I often test them on a handy piece of soft metal like a cent to see if I need to touch up a flattened area. Jim
first off welcome to CT. you find them all over ebay stamped with all types of symbols and letters. its is not uncommon. it is obviously post mint and has no real value.
I have a cent with a large 'A', and another with an 'X'. I don't know why I kept them, I guess it's just a curiosity.
