I would like to know what kind of error is on this penny, please... also, can anyone tell what the date is? Even my reading glasses and a magnifying glass were of no help to me. (note: The actual penny is darker than the image shown.) Thanks...
Me, too. Thanks for looking. I thought maybe it was an eight. Hard to tell because of it's condition, though. Any idea what the shape error is called? (I'm new to this - haven't fooled with coins since I was a child.)
Looks like a 1919 Wheat Cent. I can see no error on this coin. The coin has circulated extensively, and received some damage at some point after leaving the mint. Spend this one.
Looks like a 1919-S wheat cent, but maybe, just maybe, it's a 1909-S wheat cent; and maybe , just maybe, it's a 1909-S V.D.B. wheat cent?
When I look at it, the spacing between the two nines and the additional mark on the left makes me wonder if it's a 1949. Does it look like a four to anyone else? Also, I was wondering about how it would have gotten it's shape?
Certainly not a 1909. It could be a 49, but I still think a 19. As to how it ended up looking like this, well the circulation is very heavy. The end that is smashed could have been hit with a hammer of something like that.
There is certainly an "S" mintmark. I doubt that with the amount of wear on this coin that the initials would still be there if they were to begin with. That is a great question though. That would certainly narrow down the date.
I've reduced the image to greyscale to try and keep the dpi high. I can see the "S". I also see what looks like a backward "S" stamped above the date and something else there. Any ideas?
