I received another odd coin in change today, this time it is a penny. The surface is smooth and when I held it up to the light, the lines were not scratches, but seem to be under the surface, if that makes sense. Is this something that happened at the mint? The pictures do not show it as strongly as if you had the coin in hand.

Welcome:hail: to the forum matthew88. This "wood grain" pattern is rather common in cents from the late 1970's and early 1980's. The alloy has not been properly mixed.

Hello, rockdude. Thanks for the welcome, and the reply. I have never seen a penny like this, so I thought it was interesting. Thanks again for the explanation!

There's several collectors that like them, including myself. But as I said they are rather common.

As rockdude said it's a "woody", and a nice keeper. If it were mine I'd throw it in a 2X2.
