Don't know what would of caused this. You guys got any idea? The head seems to dip in and the obverse seems to be raised .also seems like abrasions or some sort around the head and some on the back.
Yes, progressive indirect design transfer (a.k.a. ghosting, heavy design transfer, internal metal displacement phenomenon). A form of die deterioration. It's especially common among 1954-S nickels. Ken Potter speculates that the nickel planchets were unusually hard, which was also hard on the dies.
