Found this 1982-D LMC Large Date while coin roll hunting. Color looked odd and which makes me question whether this coin had an acid bath? Coin weights at 3.07g and is not magnetic. Just wanting to know if this is an altered coin? Thank you!
Yes, I believe your coin is altered. Vinegar is an aqueous solution of acetic acid and trace chemicals that may include flavorings. The cent is not pure copper so that some acids may dissolve the tin more than the copper. It is hard to say just what your coin may have been exposed to. May have been in an auto's cup holder with spilled soda. Its all about Ph and time. https://www.usgs.gov/special-topic/...ce_center_objects=0#qt-science_center_objects
Yes, vinegar is acid. When folks use ‘strong’ acid you’ll get the wavy look you won’t get with vinegar or Coke. I should have been clearer. On a solid copper, you can make the cent razor thin with acid (sulphuric I think).
Your coin could have been Sand-blasted, a course grit sand would make the details mushy and leave pitting and change the color.
