I was going through rolls the other day and this is what I came up with... It looks like a real penny right dimensions and stuff, but just hollow and no face. I thought it was cool. Are cents made by pushing the head part into this??? http://www.flickr.com/photos/16307997@N00/188999985/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/16307997@N00/188999986/
Though I'm not the world's most knowledgable person on things like this, I can't help but wonder if that's what they call a "magicians coin" - a coin with a hollow compartment for hiding very small things inside. I'll wait on declaring anything, though, until somebody with more knowledge about this comes along. ~AJM
i might agree... something just doesn't look quite right about the back of the coin Maybe it was used to smuggle microfilm around the country!!! COOL!!!
Was it a new bank or mint roll, or a repacked one from a bank customer? If it was a repack, it appears in the photo like one a person can create with a strong acid solution carefully applied to the obverse, to remove the copper alloy and expose the zinc ( and quickly neutralize it ). If you are real careful, you can preserve the rims. From the photo, it looks like even part of the zinc layer was removed.
I got it from a roll from the bank. I do know that the bank did not roll it themselves, but they had to ship it in to get rolled.
