Hey, guys. I found this penny at work one day. It's...silver underneath the copper. I don't know if it's special, a mistake, or what. So, I didn't post in the "what's it worth" for the simple fact that, I don't care how much it's worth, I wanna know if it's a rarity. Any input is appreciated. Thanks.
Since 1982 lincoln cents have been copper plated over zinc which is silver colored. Your coin has worn through the copper and the zinc is showing.
More specifically, all cents, since 1983, have a .001 plated layer of copper over a zinc core. Wear the plating off and voila!
No. A 1939 was almost pure copper. I've forgotten the alloy, but it was not plated like modern coins and there were tiny amounts of other metals in the alloy. Please post a picture.
