Daulton, it's what we call DEF DAM (Definitely Damaged). It IS PMD, as you suggest. It is NOT an error. It is NOT the least bit rare. We see coins like that all the time, that is why one of our more knowledgeable members coined the phrase DEF DAM. If you were to put a penny on the concrete sidewalk, then step on it and use the bottom of your shoe to skid/scuff it along the sidewalk, you would get a similar result. Do you have a Red Book yet? If you don't, you should get one. It will teach you a lot about what kind of errors to look for. No offense Daulton, but right now, if you think stuff like that is/are errors, then you are searching blind. Get the Red Book and let it open your eyes. Here's more info and sources. Study these carefully. http://www.maddieclashes.com/rotated-die-error/ lincoln-cent-bies Cuds on Coins Wexler's Coins and Die Varieties On that Wexler's link there is a menu on the upper left you can choose topics from. Start with the one that explains the minting process, but eventually you should read them all. Good luck and keep posting.
Well I said odd looking penny and then someone suggested it was missing a layer so I asked what caused it, my first question was is it PMD so I didn't think it was an error just wanted to know what would cause it, and just in case it was an error I ask if it's rare. Thank you for the information and I will have to get myself the red book
