Hi All, I'd love to get your opinions on this odd 1994 cent I found while searching through cents. As you can see from the images, the primary unusual thing with this cent is several extra lines of raised metal to the right of the Lincoln memorial. Additionally, in the column bays two to the right of Lincoln is another raised bit of metal next to a column which may or may not be related. I've already looked through the listings on CONECA as well as what Ken Potter has online and this doesn't match anything for 1994. Have I found a new DDR? Or is there some other explanation? Thanks!
There isn't additional doubling that I see; however, it looks pretty different than strike doubling I've seen before so I don't think that's it. After thinking about it more, I wonder if it's a few well-placed heavy die-polish scratches?
Ag: The 'image #3: extra metal, I believe is either a die scratch or the start of a die crack. The others, not likely to be a DD, espeically since there is no other doubling. With a DD you should see doubling in more than one area, although the 1984 Lincoln, double ear, is an exception. I tend to agree with your followup note: a well placed die scratch.
Thanks for the response. The reason I think it might be a DD is because there is a 1994 DDR known with doubling only in between the columns- what's photographed and discussed here: http://koinpro.tripod.com/Articles/19941cV001.htm Before learning about that one I would have agreed with you that there should be doubling somewhere else too.
Definate strike doubling. Look at how flat and 'shelf-like' the under-image is. If a double die, it would be the same height as the other letters. Keep looking, I do.
