today i got a 1940 quarter. it's well worn and no mint marks. there are 2 letters on the front. it looks like they were stamped into the coin. left of washington's nose is the letter F, and right of the curls in his wig is the letter W. i was looking all over the web and found nothing. just wondering if this is something, or just something someone did too the coin. tried too take a pic but our camera just won't focus that close. i'll have to try something else, and post it when i can. thank you for any info.

    /cheers

What you describe is not something that happened at the US Mint. Sounds like a counter stamp of some sort.

I've actually seen the FW counterstamp before although I don't know who/what it was for.

Can you say "Post mint damage"?

BTW no mint mark that year just means its a product of the Philadelphia Mint.
