I just received a mint shipment of 50 2005 Proof sets. 42 of the 50 "Ocean In View" proof have this mysterious flaw on the bottom part of the E in view and the H in THE. Has any one seen this before. I don't know wether to return these sets to the mint or keep them just in case. I have attached an image so you can see what I am talking about. At first I thought It was die grease but it will not come off no matter what I try and when you view the cion at an angle the dark areas shine in contrast to the matte raised sections of the rest of the letters. This is the forst post I have ever made in a chat room so please except my apologies if I made a mistake. What is a thread?
Hi sampson, and welcome to Coin Talk. I'm sure some of our error experts will be along in a while and give you a response about the anomaly you reported. Technically this is a Forum, not a Chat Room. Folks come by at different times; read all the posts, or maybe just the ones with titles that attract their interest; and post responses if they feel they have something to say about what's already been posted. In Chat Rooms multiple members on line at the same time can all see every one's posts in a more conversational mode. Threads are the structure of a Forum. If a reader clicks on the "Reply" or "Quote" button in a posting, his/her response will be added to the same thread. If a reader clicks on "New Thread" in a Forum's list of existing threads, his/her posting will initiate a new thread that others can respond to.
Howdy bsampson - Welcome to the Forum !! A thread is nothing more than a topic of conversation. Your post here for example - is the beginning a new thread or topic to be discussed. As for what appears as black marks in your pics. If I understand you correctly the marks only appear black in color when viewed from a particular angle - and when viewed from a different angle they appear silver in color - am I correct ? If I am, what this is is a break in luster - a spot or spots on the Proof coin's devices where there is no frost. As such it is not an error.
I agree with GDJMSP it is not an error, but it is a flaw and will severly IMHO lower the value of the affected coins . Rick
