I have a bunch of BU Lincoln rolls in plastic tubes that I want to go through looking for high grade coins. But the original bank wrapper rolls--I haven't opened any of them yet. Do most people do that, or do you store them for possibly selling them later?
that all depends on you. my dad has several unopened rolls from the 50s & 60s that he is hanging on to, and he isn't the least bit interested in opening them. personally, curiosity would get the best of me.
okay, i might get thrown off the site for mentioning this, but i feel obliged... i got a box of pennies from the bank last week, midways through the box, i came across 7 bank rolls of bu lincoln cents that someone had cashed in for some reason... I had to open one out of curiousity... Then, I gave 4 of the remaining rolls to my father as we split all our finds... So I had 2 rolls left... Left the house that morning, went into my QT that I go to every morning, got my .95 coffee refill and realized I had no way to pay for it except for my 2 rolls still outside in my box... Now, I like coins, but I LOVE coffee... I briefly considered opening them and checking for keepers but then I would have had to reroll them or count out 95 cents and I just didn't want to... okay, it is not like they were that valuable... not like I bought a pack of smokes with 5 morgans or anything... it just annoyed me that I didn't go through them...
My nephew bought a pack of cigarettes with three album pages of proof Roosevelts. Made me cry. (They were mine.)
I have a 1956 nickel roll and a Lincoln cent 1968 roll OBW. I've only had them for a few weeks each. I don't know what I will do with them either. I'm sure to open them, maybe for Xmas.
I would definitely would open them. The wrappers can turn them from the sulfur in the paper. I take any rolls I have and put them in plastic tubes very carefully then tape the lid shut and put them in box's made for them. Then I put a desicant in there with them to keep dry before taking them to the Bank Vault Box. I've seen many an old roll ruined from leaving them in the paper. Not all will ruin but it's a chance taht there is no reason for IMO.
